Cousin marriage is marriage between people with a common grandparent or between people who share another relatively recent ancestor.
Advantages of out of family marriage
Such marriages range from being considered ideal and actively encouraged, to being uncommon but still legal, to being seen as incestuous and legally prohibited. The high level of marriage between blood relatives within the family accounts for nearly a third of birth defects in babies.
University of Edinburgh Experts say that marriages outside the family that children grow tall and intelligent. According to research by the University of Edinburgh in the two different DNA parents have tall and intelligent children as compared to in the same DNA parents. Experts said that marriage outside the family also helps in prevention of various hereditary diseases.
Experts was speaking on ‘Cousin Marriage and Genetics “Part of the disadvantages of cousin marriage was an increase in the number of babies born with birth defects and an increase in the number of babies who die early after birth as well as increased miscarriages,” they said.
In Arab countries, cousin marriages range between 20-70% of all marriages with between 50 to 70% occurring in Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Pakistan and India also have up to 60% of marriages happening between cousins.
Public education, pre-marital counseling and genetic testing, pre-implantation diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis as well as newborn screening and treatment are all essential to make people aware of the problems associated with cousin marriages and how to avoid them.
Avoidance of first cousin marriage will help reduce the frequency of birth defects and genetic problems which are more likely to occur as a result of similarity of the genes carried by couples, an expert has advised.
